Clasificación de aerogeneradores¶
Wind turbines are classified into different wind classes based on the maximum wind speeds they're designed to withstand. This classification system, defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 61400-1, helps match turbines to appropriate installation sites.
IEC Wind Classes¶
The main classification system uses four classes (I through IV), based on two key parameters:
Class I - Highest wind speeds

There's also a Class S (Special) category for turbines with non-standard design parameters specified by the designer.
Operational Wind Speed Ranges¶
Additionally, turbines have three critical operational thresholds:

Cut-in speed: Minimum wind speed to start generating power (typically 3-4 m/s)

Rated speed: Wind speed at which maximum power output is reached (typically 12-16 m/s)

Cut-out speed: Maximum operational wind speed before the turbine shuts down for safety (typically 25 m/s or about 56 mph)
The cut-out speed protects the turbine from damage during storms, which is separate from the extreme wind speeds the structure must survive when shut down.
