Power Electronics Back-to-Back Converters in DFIG Wind Turbines
The Back-to-Back (B2B) converter is the heart of DFIG wind turbines: it enables wide-range variable-speed operation by controlling the rotor winding currents. ACMSL provides a dedicated engineering tool for computing all electrical and magnetic variables in the DFIG machine and the demand placed on the B2B converter.
5-1 The DFIG B2B Application
The DFIG B2B Converter Analyser computes all the magnetic and electric variables in the asynchronous induction machine of DFIG wind turbines, and derives the current, voltage and power demand on the Back-to-Back converter for any operating point.
Key capabilities:
- Computation of stator and rotor flux, current and voltage phasors
- Active and reactive power flows: stator side, rotor side, and grid side of converter
- Slip range analysis (sub-synchronous and super-synchronous operation)
- Converter sizing: minimum required current and voltage ratings of the rotor-side converter (RSC) and grid-side converter (GSC)
- Power factor analysis at the point of common coupling (PCC)
- Ideal for post-mortem analysis of converter failures
A free 2-day evaluation license is granted automatically on first launch.
5-2 Video – Practical Use Cases
A video explanation of the DFIG B2B application, showing typical use cases in engineering and training contexts:
- How to enter machine parameters and operating setpoints
- Interpreting the phasor diagrams and power flow results
- Using the tool for converter sizing in a new wind turbine design
- Post-mortem analysis: identifying converter stress from field measurements
